The solution

Pellet heating is an end to wood heating, which releases fine particles into the air you breathe or natural gas that is not renewable.

The pellets (or pellets) are made of wood shaving clumped with corn starch for better calorific yield. It is extremely economical compared to its competitors, and can emit fine particles in the air through more complete combustion.

Who is it for?

  • I am an individual wishing to change my old heating system polluting (classic wood) or costing me expensive (gas, fuel).
  • I am a professional in the hotel industry, catering… I would like to offer a greener service to my clients for their comfort and that ofnature.

Ingredients

  • The space needed to accommodate the facility (3m2 and above);
  • A producer of standard pellets;
  • A boiler installed by an approved agent;
  • A (small) silo to accommodate pellets.
  • The description of the steps
  • Help in choosing the boiler
  • All existing financial aid
  • How it works and how it works

Preparation

Step 1: Design the right solution for your building
  • Ask for the support of the ADEME which helps to carry out a study of implantation, size of the boiler, size of the silo, help for subsidies …
  • That’s when you have to decide whether you prefer an automatic boiler (about 20k) or manual (about 15k). This determines what type of silo will be needed to store pellets.

Step 2: Financial aid

Not all aids are cumulative. Only CITE and Prime Energy are cumulative, which can already significantly reduce the amount of work.

Step 3: Contact a licensed installer for a quote.

You can use effy.fr that compares and finds a licensed craftsman around you.

Step 4: Formulate maintenance contract with installer
This contract generally includes annual maintenance and travel in the event of a breakdown during boiler operation.
Step 5: Find a pellet producer and have them delivered.
  • You have to be careful about the quality of the pellets to have the best price-to-return ratio;
  • It is cheaper to buy them in bulk than in bags, but it is also more difficult to ensure the quality of the bulk. Pic Bleu offers a non-exhaustive list of the main French sellers here;
  • It is cheaper to get delivered in July than in December-January.

Step 6: Set the date of the work (between 1 and 2 days) and make room where your boiler will be the day before so as not to waste time with the day installer d.
Step 7: Think about setting up the installation
Programming, temperature setting, winter/summer passage. This can be done at the same time as the installation with the professional who will explain how the boiler works.
Step 8: Test the installation and note all defects the first few days to readjust the settings and make the installation as efficient as possible.
Maintenance
  • Routine maintenance at the owner’s expense
    1. Cleaning the burner frequently (between weekly and yearly depending on the model);
    2. Empty the ashes;
    3. Change the ignition candle (lifespan: 3 to 10 years)
  • Annual interview with a specialist (setting, maintenance of control pilots, temperature sensor…).

Benefits

Details of the figures can be found in our “sources” section below

More than 2 times cheaper than gas heating [1]

  • The cost of a tonne of pellets ranges from 220 to 250 euros HT. It takes 3 to 4 tons to heat 370m2 per year. >> 2 times less than to heat the same gas surface (about 2500 euros per year).

10 times less fine particulate matter than log wood [2]

  • High calorific density therefore little loss of energy. Energy efficiency is above 90% [3].
  • Few emissions related to transport: pellets (or pellets) are made of sawdust aggregated with corn starch, collected in French carpentry and forests.

Relocating energy

  • The manufacture of pellets in an immediate environment (the neighbouring village) allows to relocate jobs;
  • Fits for all needs.

Precautions of employment

  • Pay attention to the quality of the boiler by involving certified professionals;
  • Do not store pellets anywhere. Installing a silo to accommodate them is preferable so that they do not lose efficiency;
  • The calorific yield will also depend on the quality of the pellets.

The farm of Noémie, Gilles and Marie-Christine Revial (Alberville)
Creator of the solution

Gilles, a climatologist by training, decided 20 years ago to start his activity in the service of tourism in the Alps and the Pyrenees. Marie Christine, a nurse in the paediatric department at Albertville Hospital, also became a tourism professional. In 2008, they opened an eco-gite to Albertville: the Noémie Farm, which is now a model in terms of innovation for the energy transition! In addition to pellet heating, they also purify their own water thanks to a reed treatment plant, much more advantageous than the conventional sewage system!
